Maine's Congressional Representation
Structure of the U.S. Congress
The United States Congress is a bicameral legislature, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Each state's representation in Congress is determined by its population and constitutionally guaranteed minimums.
Senate Representation
Each state, regardless of population, has two Senators. These Senators serve six-year terms, with staggered elections to ensure continuous representation. Maine, therefore, has two Senators.
House of Representatives Representation
The number of Representatives each state has in the House is determined by its population, as determined by the decennial census. The total number of Representatives is fixed by law (currently 435). Maine's population, relative to the national population, determines its allocation of Representatives.
Maine's Congressional District
Maine is allocated a specific number of Representatives based on its population. This number is currently one. The state is a single congressional district, meaning its entire population elects a single Representative to the House.
Terms of Office
Representatives serve two-year terms, with elections held every even-numbered year. This ensures frequent accountability to the electorate.
