Understanding Wool Properties

Wool fibers possess unique characteristics that influence cleaning methods. These include natural crimp, which provides insulation and cushioning, and lanolin, a natural wax that protects the fibers. Improper handling can cause shrinkage, felting, and damage to the wool's structure.

Regular Maintenance Practices

• Airing: Periodic airing in fresh air helps to revitalize the fibers and reduce the need for frequent cleaning. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods, as it can damage the wool.
• Spot Cleaning: Address spills immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth. Gently blot the area, working from the outside in, to prevent spreading. Avoid rubbing vigorously, which can cause felting. A mild soap solution can be used for stubborn stains, but ensure thorough rinsing.
• Vacuuming: Regular vacuuming with an upholstery attachment removes dust, debris, and allergens.

Washing Considerations

Hand Washing Method

Hand washing is the gentlest method. Use cool or lukewarm water (below 30°C or 85°F) and a pH-neutral detergent specifically formulated for wool. Submerge the item gently and avoid agitation or twisting. Allow it to soak for a short period. Rinse thoroughly with cool water until no detergent remains.

Machine Washing Considerations

If machine washing is preferred, use a front-loading machine with a dedicated wool or delicate cycle. Select a cool water setting and a gentle, pH-neutral wool detergent. Place the item inside a mesh laundry bag for added protection. Avoid top-loading machines with agitators, as they can be too harsh.

Drying Procedures

Avoid using a machine dryer, as the high heat can cause irreversible shrinkage and felting. Gently press out excess water by rolling the item in a clean towel. Reshape the item and lay it flat on a clean, dry surface or drying rack, away from direct heat or sunlight. Turn it periodically to ensure even drying. Avoid hanging, as this can distort the shape.

Lanolin Replenishment

Washing removes lanolin. Products are available to re-introduce lanolin into the wool after cleaning, helping to maintain its softness and resilience. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

Storage Guidelines

Ensure the item is completely dry before storing to prevent mold and mildew. Store in a breathable cotton bag in a cool, dry place. Consider using cedar chips or lavender sachets to deter moths.
